series Robin Wood in Italy - (from Forges Mute 55) Gilgamesh

In the good old days when we still thought that Robin Wood to write all his comics (but some indiscretion already leaked through nippurweb.com.ar) I wrote a long piece about Wood that ended with a list of his series arrived in Italy. "And we hope not too many stupid things you have written" I said to introduce it on Mute Fucine 51. Here, indeed, I take this opportunity to update the blog and correct some things ...
And of course to expand the list with the new series of the weekly Wood appeared after 2002.

Gilgamesh ( Skorpio 49/83)

In a distant future, a man observes with concern and anxiety the unfolding of human history is Gilgamesh, a Guardian presiding over peace and harmony of the universe. His concern stems from not being able to understand the motivations of the human soul. To return to the office calmly decides to repeat his past life to rediscover the lost emotions. Thus began the saga of the Immortal, loosely based on that ' of Gilgamesh Epos which is the first written record of human civilization. Dissatisfied with the king of Uruk, Gilgamesh is obsessed with the idea of \u200b\u200bhaving to die and the providential help of Utnapistim (Wood's interpretation is that a Martian) will make him realize his dream. But immortality is a gift and poisoned the passage of centuries and civilizations will let more and more pessimistic and disenchanted. After the holocaust that wipes out life on Earth (perhaps the highest page of the entire career of Wood) Gilgamesh part hibernated with 12 children looking for a new planet to colonize: will be established on Sumer, the threat of sventerà Primordial and will end in the ranks of the Guardians, then closing his story with a perfect circularity and a cure, almost impossible to find in other stories of Wood.

[Mea Culpa! Mea Culpa! MEA MAXIMA fault! I did not know the true origin of Gilgamesh, which is only a creation of Luis "Lucho" Olivera. Gilgamesh, el Inmortal debuted on Anuario D'Artagnan in December 1969 with a story where there was already the whole story later told by Wood, from the beginning to the end of the world, scheduled for November 10, 1984. The original series went on for ten episodes (texts and drawings of only Olivera) until 1973, when Sergio Mulki succeeded to the text and wrote over 20 episodes.
Robin Wood revived the series in 1980, when Oliver had probably ended his collaboration with the record, making it essentially a "reboot" as happens regularly in the U.S. market superhero]

The first thirty-five episodes of Gilgamesh deserve nothing but praise: Wood could tell hundreds of stories scattered throughout the story and instead is limited to 20 (very beautiful) self-contained episodes after the first miniseries, Started in 5 episodes. The variety of reading levels is an important value-added and what about those 10 unforgettable episodes in which Gilgamesh is the only actor on the stage ... But with space travel, the series will end a lot, both textual and graphical. Towards the end find ourselves part of the excellence of the early days, but the best season was already long over. Certainly Gilgamesh was one of the most important series ever published and the Euro, excluding the less successful episodes, present a masterpiece to date. Despite the beautiful final conclusion, Argentina Gilgamesh continued without Wood [E very long: the last episode written by Grassi appeared in Argentina in 1998! Whether it was a reprint? Fat but he only wrote a few episodes, and subsequent management were Wood Ferrari] . As befits a work scope, Gilgamesh has had several reprints: up to insert tuttocolore Skorpio 11 / 88 to 6 / 89 on Euracomix (12 volumes) and a necklace of her own 12 volumes of Bonelli.
